Three ways to nourish your ki (vital energy) in winter
Winter is an opportunity to conserve and replenish your ki—your vital life energy. When you take the time to nourish your ki during the colder months, you’re building energy reserves that will support you in the more active, outward-facing seasons ahead.

When you nourish your ki in winter you’ll be more balanced, resilient, and ready for the months ahead. Here are three ways to do just that:
1. Practice gratitude
Gratitude is a powerful key to healing and promotes health and happiness. It’s easy to feel grateful for warm weather, blue skies, and sunshine, but how can we cultivate gratitude during winter?
One way is to appreciate life’s small comforts: the warmth of indoor heating, cosy clothes, thick doonas, hot drinks, and the shelter of a good umbrella on a rainy day. These everyday blessings are easy to overlook, but noting them can help you experience better health and wellness.
Research suggests regularly practising gratitude can improve sleep, strengthen your immune system, and support emotional and physical wellbeing.
“Those who marvel at the beauty of the world in summer
will find equal cause for wonder and admiration in winter.”
– John Burroughs
2. Adjust your sleep rhythm: go to bed and rise earlier
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), we possess and are surrounded by yin and yang energy. These complementary forces influence our health and environment. Yin is associated with night, rest, stillness, and coolness; yang with movement, sunlight, warmth, and activity.
Out of the four seasons, winter is the most yin. It invites stillness, quiet, and reflection. By aligning yourself with the natural qualities of winter, you balance in your mind, body and spirit. Going to bed earlier honours yin time, allowing your body to rest and repair. Rising earlier awakens and activates yang energy for the day ahead.
This seasonal sleep rhythm is a simple, natural way to support your vitality and promote balance.
3. Make the most of the winter sun
While winter is predominantly yin, it’s important to gently cultivate yang energy to stay balanced, physically, mentally and emotionally. One of the most effective ways to do this is to spend time in winter sunlight.
In T.C.M., the sun is a source of yang, it’s active, warm, and expansive. Even short moments spent in sunlight can help warm your body, boost your mood, and support circulation.
Here are a few ideas:
- Take a gentle walk in the morning sun to activate your yang energy.
- Sit by a sunny window and soak up the sun’s warmth while reading, resting, writing or working.
- Stand or sit in sunlight with mindful awareness, while practising or receiving Reiki.
Small moments in the sun can uplift your spirit and increase your vitality, which helps you tofeel better during winter.
Winter doesn’t need to be endured; it can be embraced. By nourishing your ki with rest, gratitude and sunlight, you support your whole being. These simple practices align you with the natural rhythm of the season. When you nourish your ki in winter, you have more energy to blossom in spring.
