The benefits of simplicity: How simple living and Reiki support wellbeing

Not long ago, I needed to simplify. My days were full and my mind was busier than normal, so I got practical and began the process of clearing, cleaning, and organising my home. As I created more physical space, something shifted inside me. My appreciation for Reiki practice deepened. With the joy of a more ordered home, and the simplicity of fewer visual distractions, I was reminded of how profoundly effective Reiki is. Reiki practice is gentle and simple, but creates significant healing. Do you need to pause, recharge and clear? Read more below…

1. Like Reiki practice, simple living creates mental clarity

Similar to meditation, receiving and practising quietens your mind and studies show that a clear, focused mind, can improve memory and emotional resilience. In one study, participants who practised mindfulness meditation for 20 minutes over four days showed improved memory, better concentration levels and reduced anxiety and fatigue compared to those who spent 20 minutes listening to an audiobook.

2. Like Reiki practice, simple living reduces stress

Simplifying your lifestyle may involve fewer commitments, less time rushing, and more time to pause and breathe. This shift generally helps you to experience less anxiety, stress and depression and better health and wellness.

Like receiving and practising Reiki, studies demonstrate that a balanced lifestyle can help to regulate your central nervous system and lower cortisol levels. Researchers in Sweden studied 4,821 adults between 50 and 64 years to understand how chronic stress affects health. They studied cortisol (a stress hormone) levels in hair, investigating how the hormone impacted the body over months, not just in a day. Their research revealed that participants with high cortisol levels in their hair were more likely to have high blood pressure and high inflammatory markers. Although the participants may not have been aware of their stress levels, their bodies told a different story. Chronic stress builds up over time and affects your health, even when you don’t notice it. Reiki practice reduces the stress hormone cortisol, and a balanced lifestyle promotes better long-term health and wellbeing.

3. Like Reiki practice, simple living frees energy for what matters

When your physical space is free of unnecessary clutter and your mental and emotional state is balanced, it becomes easier to implement self-care practices. Reiki is one such self-care practice. Self-care means looking after yourself so you have enough energy for your own needs and for others. It’s essential for creating a balanced, healthy lifestyle. Good self-care benefits not only you, but also your loved ones, colleagues, and the wider community. When you take care of yourself, you have a greater capacity for creativity and compassion, and can focus more easily on what truly matters. Practising and receiving Reiki balances your central nervous system. When your nervous system is in balance, you’re more connected to yourself and better able to make wise choices for your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

Simplicity and balance are not necessarily about having or doing less. Like Reiki practice, simplicity and balance are about creating space for what nourishes you physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Creating balance in your life leads to higher energy levels and improves your holistic health and wellbeing.
